Subaru has just released pricing information on the latest 2022 Subaru BRZ, a car that improves on its predecessor in a number of ways. For one, there’s more engine—and more power.
The 2.4-liter H-4 now pumps out 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, jumps of 23 hp and 28 lb-ft over the previous car’s 2.0-liter engine output. More important than the raw numbers, the new car’s torque delivery is improved, with peak torque at a relatively low 3,700 rpm (compared to the old car, which required spinning to 6,400 to unleash max twist). The chassis is stiffer, with redesigned suspension, and the interior is vastly improved. With all that revision and performance improvement, you’d expect the price to go up. But it hasn’t.
At least compared to last year. For the 2020 model year, Subaru dropped the lower tier Premium trim, and choices were limited to the upscale Limited or the performance-oriented tS—the former a hair under $30,000 and the latter a fair bit over. That means that the new 2022 BRZ’s starting price of $28,955 seems like a heck of a deal.
That said, it’s a $2,275 jump over a 2019 Premium. It’s hard to assign a value to all the subjective improvements Subaru has made until we’ve had our go behind the wheel, although the increase in torque and more ferocious corner exit pull are palpable even from the right seat. But given the increased performance and improved dynamics, as well as the much-improved interior and significantly revised exterior, it seems like a reasonable value.
As before, a six-speed automatic transmission is an extra-cost option. And in addition to the base Premium trim, the Limited trim returns with 18-inch wheels with a matte gray finish, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, and standard driver assistance tech such as blind-spot notification, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and Subaru’s Starlink system. All 2022 BRZs come with a standard Torsen limited-slip rear differential, too.
