Can the 2019 Kia Optima Compete in the Mid-Size Sedan Class?

People aren’t really buying mid-size family sedans anymore, but Kia doesn’t seem to care and continues to redesign and refresh its Optima. It was last redesigned for the 2016 model year, and the sedan gets some exterior styling tweaks for 2019 that help it look fresh along with a host of safety features that used to be optional but are now standard.

We tested the Optima SX with the top available engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 245 horsepower. After some turbo lag at launch, it delivers enough grunt to get the job done but doesn’t exactly feel sporty. In terms of ride and handling, its ride is on the firm side, even choppy at times — but it manages to stay together in corners and is fun enough behind the wheel.
