Causing a queue of five or more vehicles could see drivers issued penalties for creating bottlenecks. The Highway Code asks slow-moving vehicles to pull in when it is safe to do so and let other traffic to pass.

However, simply pulling over and letting traffic pass on busy roads could substantially reduce the risk of being penalised.

Failure to pull over when there is a long queue of traffic behind could be considered inconsiderate driving which is punishable.

Road users could be issued between three and nine points on their driving licence for breaking the rule and may also face a £5,000 fine.

Quotezone warns insurance firms could add five percent to premiums if drivers have three penalty points on their licence.

Six penalty points can also add as much as 25 percent to premium rates.

They warn penalty points can remain on a licence and continue to elevate costs for up to four years after they are first issued.

Greg Wilson, spokesperson for Quotezone said new owners “may not realise” they had to follow many different rules.

He said drivers should take care when “manoeuvering” the heavier weight of the caravan and urged road users to check the Highway Code before setting off.

He said: “2021 has witnessed a boom in staycations as pandemic restrictions continue to limit foreign travel – creating a wave of first-time caravan owners eager to hit the road.

“Many new owners may not realise that caravans have different rules and risks on the road that come with manoeuvring a heavier vehicle.

“It’s worth spending time checking the Highway Code, making sure drivers are aware of all the specific caravan driving rules and safety checks before setting off.

“Even a test run can help drivers familiarise themselves with the heavier load.”
