The best week ever kicked off at Virginia Motorsports Park on Sunday as hundreds of competitors rolled into Dinwiddie, Virginia, for tech inspection and a test-and-tune session prior to the start of HOT ROD Drag Week presented by Gear Vendors.
Optimism filled the tech line as racers spent a good portion of the day proving their safety and street-legal legitimacy to an assortment of NHRA and HOT ROD tech inspectors. Each car has to be cleared before they can embark on an adventure of a lifetime: five tracks in five days with 1,000 street miles logged, all with the goal of crowning of America’s Fastest Street Car and declaring champions in a variety of categories.
A five-hour test session gave fans and racers a glimpse of what to expect this week, with guys like Tom Bailey and David Schroeder unleashing 6-second runs. Bailey’s twin-turbocharged Camaro rolled out to an easy 6.71 at just 142 mph, lifting early so he doesn’t show his hand right away. Bailey is sporting a new 481X from Steve Morris Engines that has water jackets built in for street use. Schroeder’s nitrous-injected 1966 Corvette revealed an impressive 6.54 at 214 mph. The team relies on an 872ci engine from famed Pro Modified and Pro Stock engine builder Reher-Morrison.
An insider tip: keep an eye on the Live Feed for the Gasser class with a fierce battle between Jarrad Scott’s “Bitchin’” Ranchero and Mike Finnegan’s “Blasphemi” ’55 Chevy. The Roadkill co-host unleashed a new best time of 8.75 at 159 mph, thanks to a fuel-injected, supercharged HEMI combination.
Monday is officially Day 1 of competition and the action happens at Virginia Motorsports Park with a Live Feed available on MotorTrend’s YouTube channel and complete information, like routes and news, on HOTROD.com.
