Jonathan Barbara, Managing Director at Parkers MOT said they were getting “lots of queries” from customers complaining about lower fuel economy after using E10 petrol. He said some motorists were coming in “convinced” there was something wrong with their cars.

However, after a thorough check by mechanics, no issues could be found.

Mr Barbara said mechanics were putting the issues down to the new E10 fuel and warned “every car” would lose some miles to the gallon.

He said: “We’re getting a lot of queries from our customers saying their cars were using more fuel than usual.

“They are wondering if their car needs a service or if they have a fuel leak somewhere.”

He added: “It depends on driving style more than anything else.

“But, one customer said his car was going six or seven miles to the gallon less.

“He was convinced there was something wrong with it.

“We checked it over because he wanted reassurance.

“We said there was nothing wrong with it, it had only been serviced three months prior to that.

“We put it down literally to the E10.

“We’ve had other people complaining they are losing two to three miles to the gallon.

“I imagine that is the average of what every car is going to lose efficiency wise.”
