A spokesperson confirmed drivers can renew their licence at one of 700 branches with details sent electronically to the DVLA. They said this service was not experiencing delays with drivers likely to be issued a new licence within five days.

A Post Office spokesperson said the service used “automated booths” which were “quick to use”

They said: “We have almost 700 branches across the UK where customers can renew their driving licence for 10 years using one of our automated booths.

“The information is sent electronically to the DVLA and is not experiencing delays.

“Customers can expect to be issued with their driving licence in five working days.

“The service is quick to use and our dedicated Postmasters are on hand to provide support and make sure the right information is captured.

“Customers can find their nearest branch that offers this service [online]”.

The DVLA has previously urged drivers to use Post Office services as a “quick and easy” way to get a card.

They said: “If you are renewing your photocard driving licence you can do this quickly and easily at participating Post Office branches.

The warning comes after the DVLA confirmed paper applications were still taking six to ten weeks to process at yesterday’s Transport Committee meeting.

The DVLA has previously warned there could be an additional delay in processing more complex transactions.

This included applications where medical investigations were needed as part of an application.
