FIRST DRIVE: 2019 G14 BMW M850i Convertible review

A stylish proposition for those who enjoy a bit more sunshine when driving, the G14 BMW 8 Series Convertible is the second entry in the revived 8 Series line-up, with others being the Coupe and the recently unveiled Gran Coupe.

From a styling perspective, the Convertible’s folding soft-top is one of things that differentiates it from the regular Coupe, with others being a higher trailing edge and aluminium bars for rollover protection. Other things like the headlamps, grille and taillights are pretty much the same on both body styles.

Bringing the soft-top down is done via a button on the centre console, in which the entire process will have the structure tucked behind the rear seats in 15 seconds. A built-in wind deflector and optional neck warmers help keep things comfortable in case it gets a bit chilly with the roof down.

The engine powering this M850i variant that we tried is a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 with 530 PS and 750 Nm of torque. With plenty of power to fulfill the role of a grand tourer, the car is also quite the sprinter, taking just 3.9 seconds to complete the century sprint (only one tenths slower than the coupe).

While it may be a good looking thing, there are some drawbacks that comes with this vehicle body style, which is discussed in this video among other things. Happy watching.
