A car expert has revealed how you can stop your vehicle’s door handles and frames from being frozen shut during the upcoming winter season —and his solution costs less than £10. The auto enthusiast, Chris, detailed his strategy in a YouTube video which has amassed over 4million views.
He along with other online mechanics, shares his clever tips, including a bad habit that is lowering your gas mileage and the durable wheels cost less than alloys. Chris’s (@ChrisFix) video clip begins with a solution for frozen car door locks needing a mechanical key.
While many drivers have electronic key fobs, they may need to use the mechanical key hidden within their fob to make entry if the fob malfunctions.
Chris recommends drivers who can’t insert a mechanical key into their driver door’s lock spray water-resistant silicone lubricant into the key’s slot.
A can of this spray typically costs roughly £5.
Chris says: “What silicone does is it’s hydrophobic, meaning it displaces water [from winter snow or rain], so water won’t be able to freeze if it’s not there.”
The car expert clarifies you don’t need to apply much spray inside the key’s entry slot to complete his hack.
He added sliding your key into its slot a couple of times ensures the silicone thoroughly works its way inside the area.

Next, Chris provides a solution for when your vehicle’s door frame is frozen shut.
He notes this problem occurs when water enters the weather stripping around the door’s inside edges and freezes.
You can respond by spraying Chris’ silicone spray on a rag and wiping it around the entire weather stripping area.
If this task seems like a lot of work, Chris emphasizes you only have to apply the spray on a door’s weather stripping once for it to last all winter.
He adds: “Don’t forget to wipe down the [interior] weather stripping on the door itself, and don’t forget to get any silicone on any of the interior trim.”
