Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Roadster: A Playable, 1,000-HP EV Hypercar

Jaguar has almost been exclusively producing concept cars that will never see the light of day lately, but it’s only while the company figures out its new all-electric direction. Pointed in that same direction is the latest of those concept cars I mentioned, the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Roadster, which virtually chops its top for the new Gran Turismo 7 video game on Playstation.

If the new Vision GT Roadster looks familiar, it’s because Jag took the design of its two previous Vision Gran Turismo Coupé and Vision Gran Turismo SV “extreme” endurance racer concepts, closed off most of the body, added circular grille lights and a fin, and left just one seat poking out for the driver. It makes for an impressively impractical yet very handsome roadster design that’s obviously more oriented for a fun day at the track (or so you could imagine through a video game from the comfort of your own home).

The fin emerging from behind the driver is inspired by the similar piece on the iconic Jaguar D-Type racing roadster, which won Le Man three times, with an LED-illuminated Union Jack flag etched into the bespoke bodywork so you don’t forget it.

The body itself is said to be a monocoque design employing extensive use of carbon fiber and “advanced aluminum alloys,” probably hinting at what we’ll see on future street performance EVs from Jag in the real world, too. A small windshield buffets very fast-moving air over the driver, with the rest of the traditional two-seater cockpit conceptually removed for weight, and closed off for streamlined aerodynamics.

Like the other GT concepts, the Roadster is also all-electric. In this configuration, it features three of Jag’s Formula E motorsport-rated electric motors that are “developed by Jaguar TCS Racing,” which altogether put down 750 kW, or just a nose over 1,000 horsepower. The 2020 Gran Turismo SV “extreme” car had four of these motors, which we guess is what makes it so “extreme.”

In the Gran Turismo game world, the new roadster is capable of zero to 60 mph in just two seconds, and can go all the way up to a top speed of 200 mph. The car can now be downloaded by players in Gran Turismo 7 on Playstation 4 and 5, and the game development team and Jag also went back and made the 2020 Gran Turismo SV available in-game, as well.
