A report from the Commons Transport Select Committee called for changes to driving habits to ensure that demand for electricity can be met. They believe this can be done with pricing, allowing drivers to charge for less at times when there is less demand, such as overnight.
The committee urged the Government to encourage drivers to top up their car batteries frequently rather than recharging from empty to full in one go.
When drivers do charge their whole battery, it puts a massive strain on the National Grid.
The report said: “The Government must mandate that industry uses price as a lever to move consumer behaviour away from conventional refuelling habits towards ‘a little but often’ approach.”
During the inquiry, the transport committee heard evidence from energy industry representatives about the importance of smart chargers.
These types of chargers alter the amount of electricity sent to the car and is dependent on the overall demand across the UK.
The chair of the committee, Conservative MP Huw Merriman, warned of the potential consequences.
He said: “Unless the National Grid gains more capacity, consumer behaviour will have to alter so that charging takes place when supply can meet the additional demand.
“The alternative will be blackouts in parts of the country.

“We also cannot have a repeat of the broadband and mobile ‘not spot’ lottery which would mean those in remote parts cannot join the electric vehicle revolution.
“To help consumers see their route to a zero-emission world, choosing to run an electric vehicle must be as seamless as possible.”
The report also called on ministers to identify areas where the systems would not be able to cope with additional usage.
This would require a partnership between ministers and the National Grid.
