The new Rogue is quicker and more powerful than its predecessor. With 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque from its four-cylinder engine, the 2021 Nissan Rogue makes the 0-60 run in a respectable 8.1 seconds, according to our tests. Compare that to the previous Rogue, which sauntered to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds with its 170-hp, 175 lb-ft engine. It’s no athlete, but the new Rogue generally drives well. It exhibits good body control on curvy roads, and it doesn’t wallow over road imperfections. We’ve also praised the Rogue for its improved steering feel, though not its slightly loud engine.
If you’re looking for a near-luxury SUV experience, the new Rogue is definitely the better pick. Nissan is offering a new Rogue Platinum with posh trimmings such as quilted leather upholstery, heated rear seats, and ambient lighting.
Hands down, the new Rogue offers better technology than the old model. The new model comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, replacing the 7.0-inch unit fitted to every 2020 Rogue. From there, buyers can upgrade to a 9.0-inch screen we’ve found to be responsive and user-friendly in our testing. Wireless Apple CarPlay is now available in addition to standard wired Android Auto and wireless smartphone charging. Also new for 2021 is an optional 10.8-inch head-up display and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Finally, the model comes with the latest version of Nissan’s ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology with navigation data to automatically adjust cruise control speed for upcoming curves in the road. In heavy traffic, it will remain at a stop for up to 30 seconds and automatically continue driving forward when the car ahead has moved. Generally, we’ve found it to be a helpful feature. Suffice it to say, if you’re a techie at heart, you might be better off with the new Rogue rather than the old model.
This is a close one, but the new Rogue is slightly more fuel efficient than its predecessor. The base FWD model returns 27/35 mpg city/highway, while other FWD variants get 26/34 mpg. Either way, that’s a hair better than the 2020 Rogue’s rating of 26/33 mpg with FWD. Comparing AWD models, the new Rogue gets 26/33 mpg on the base trim and 25/32 mpg on other trims, while the old Rogue comes in at an identical 25/32 mpg.
New or Used Rogue: What’s Better?
So should you buy a used CPO Rogue or splurge on the new one? If you want a better driving experience, the answer is simple: The new Rogue is quicker and more powerful than its predecessor. Updated technology also makes it feel like a much more refined vehicle, and those looking for appointments to rival some luxury carmakers will want to opt for high-end versions of the new Rogue. (A quick note: The 2021 Rogue gets a lackluster three-star frontal crash rating in government tests, but this rating only applies to vehicles built at the Kyushu Plant in Japan before January 28, 2021. Vehicles built in Tennessee with improved front passenger restraint systems could receive a better score when updated ratings are released in May.)
A new Rogue isn’t for everyone. If you’re simply looking for a practical SUV with plenty of room for the family and their gear, a used Rogue might make more sense. Just keep in mind that segment leaders such as the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are also worth a look.
