Back for a second generation, the all-new 2022 Toyota GR86 remains true to its rear-drive, affordable sports-car soul and is better than the old model it replaces. The people spoke, and Toyota responded with a GR86 packing more power, a vastly redesigned interior, and improved styling. So, how much will all this new sports car goodness cost? We have the final details on how much the fan-favorite will go for, and—surprise—it won’t cost Ferrari money.
In our initial test drive of the 2022 Toyota GR86, we estimated the fun and inexpensive 2+2 would start at just over $28,055—about the price of the last one—and we were right on target. It turns out the second-gen Toyota GR86 (which went by the name “86” before), available in Base and Premium trims, will have a starting price of $28,725 with a six-speed manual, only slightly more than the 2020 base model. Toyota kept the GR86 under $30,000 as promised, and the starting price undercuts that of the mechanically identical, also-redesigned Subaru BRZ by a few hundred dollars.
That pricing nearly holds the line means the new GR86 is quite literally an even better bargain than it was before, given its upgrades. Prop the hood open, and there sits a new 2.4-liter flat-four rated at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s a decent increase in power compared to the previous generation’s smaller 2.0-liter flat-four. With the manual transmission, that engine produced 205 hp and 156 lb-ft, while automatic models generated 200 hp and 151 lb-ft. Still offered with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the GR86 boasts other highlights, including an improved torque curve (peak torque now arrives at 3,700 rpm versus 6,600 rpm) and the addition of paddle shifters for the automatic GR86.
The range-topping GR86 Premium adds 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, a more prominent duckbill rear spoiler, adaptive LED headlights, and additional interior enhancements. When equipped with an automatic transmission, the GR86 Premium carries a window sticker of $32,825, a $4,100 uptick for the best-equipped model Toyota has to offer.
As for fuel economy, the automatic GR86 gets an EPA-estimated 21/31/25 mpg city/highway/combined, whereas the manual GR86 comes rated at 20/27/22 mpg. The considerably modernized and more powerful 2022 Toyota GR86 arrives in showrooms in December.
