What’s the Best 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Trim? Here’s Our Guide

The 2022 Wagoneer is Jeep’s newest and biggest SUV, and it marks the return of a beloved model that helped make SUVs ubiquitous. The full-size sport ute is the less expensive of two models (the other being the Grand Wagoneer) that make up Jeep’s new premium subbrand.

Although its hardcore off-roading ability is limited (for now), the new Wagoneer makes its case through a mix of practical and upscale features aimed at families, those in the market for a stout tow rig, and generally shoppers seeking a big, modern, and stylish SUV. What are the differences between the 2022 Wagoneer trim levels, and which is best? Let’s get into it.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II Pros and Cons

Even if you pick the entry-level Series II model, you’re getting a vehicle with a powerful engine. Every 2022 Wagoneer is equipped with a 392-hp 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V-8 mild hybrid powertrain. Power is fed through an eight-speed automatic transmission and to a standard rear-wheel-drive system. Four-wheel drive is also available.

The new Wagoneer’s V-8 makes more horsepower than the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe’s 5.3-liter V-8 and 2021 Toyota Sequoia’s 5.7-liter V-8. But much of its competition has moved on to 10-speed automatics for better efficiency.

Towing capacity for the 2022 Wagoneer is rated at a commendable 10,000 pounds. The 2021 Ford Expedition with its turbocharged V-6 gets close with a max of 9,300 pounds, but the Jeep has the advantage against it and most of the segment.

Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, and parking sensors are standard on every 2022 Wagoneer. Trailer sway control is also standard, and 4WD models receive five traction control settings.

Standard exterior features include a power liftgate, 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and LED headlights, daytime running lights, foglights, and taillights. Keyless entry and remote start are also standard.

Inside, this base model is well-equipped. It’s furnished with standard Nappa leather upholstery, a heated and ventilated front row, and power-adjustable 12-way driver and front passenger seats with a driver lumbar adjuster. A power-tilting and telescoping steering column is standard, as is a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

On the tech front, there’s a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen and a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster in front of the driver. The Wagoneer Series II provides USB ports for all three rows amounting to a total of eight, as well as two 12-volt outlets and one 115-volt outlet. A nine-speaker Alpine audio system sweetens the deal.

The 2022 Wagoneer Series II RWD stickers for about $70,000, the 4WD model for about $73,000. We should note that the Wagoneer is offered in only one standard exterior color, Bright White, and choosing any of the four other available colors will set you back another $595.

Because the Wagoneer is at the high end of Jeep’s lineup, it seems appropriate to compare it to other upscale grades of mainstream SUVs. In this case, we looked at the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Premier, which is one step below the model’s top trim. At that level, the Tahoe is priced thousands less and gets a hands-free liftgate and power-folding side mirrors. But it also has a significantly smaller instrument cluster display, and its leather isn’t as nice as the Wagoneer’s.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series III Pros and Cons

There are currently just two trim levels of Wagoneer, and the higher trim, the Series III, sees a limited number of upgrades. Those include standard automatic high-beams, rear load leveling, and an air suspension for 4WD models. Cabins at this grade receive a head-up display and heated second-row captain’s chairs.

Jeep offers 10 equipment packages for the Wagoneer, and among them are a handful of options exclusively for the Series III. Those include 20-inch off-road wheels and tires that come in the $1,095 Advanced All-Terrain Group (available only for the 4WD model) and a locking safe in the center console in the $1,495 Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package. With the available $5,495 Premium Group I, the Series III receives power-deployable running boards and a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system that the Series II with the package doesn’t get, but on both trims, the package brings an impressive tri-pane panoramic sunroof.

The jump from the Wagoneer Series II to the Series III is roughly $5,000 for each drivetrain configuration, so the Series III RWD retails for about $75,000 and the Series III 4WD goes for about $78,000. In comparison, the top trim 2021 Tahoe High Country RWD stickers for about $71,500 and $74,500 for the 4WD. It gets a larger standard engine making more horsepower and bigger 22-inch wheels, but interior packaging and materials aren’t as nice as the Wagoneer’s, and the Jeep still tows more.

The top-trim 2021 Ford Expedition Platinum also offers more power and 22-inch wheels, but it lacks the Wagoneer Series III’s standard air suspension, head-up display, nicer leather, and second-row captain’s chairs. The Expedition Platinum RWD retails for about $76,000 and the 4WD model for about $79,000.

Which 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Trim Is Best?

The good news is Jeep packages most of what people need in the less expensive Wagoneer Series II. It covers the bases in everyday utility and spaciousness. And if you don’t live in an area of the country known for inclement weather or venture off the beaten path, you can probably live with RWD instead of the more expensive 4WD.

The bad news is the Wagoneer still is, at a minimum, a roughly $70,000 SUV. At that price point, the field of vehicles to consider extends beyond mainstream SUVs to include some low-end luxury fare and, depending on how important the third row is, smaller crossovers, as well, including midsize three-row models. We have a tough time reconciling the additional $5,000 for standard Series III items like the air suspension, head-up display, and second-row captain’s chairs. Nearly $5,500 for the equipment group with the panoramic roof seems like a stretch, as well.

If the Wagoneer’s size and capability are in fact what you need, the base model Series II is enough. From its safety and convenience features to its spacious cabin, posh trimmings, and impressive towing capacity, the 2022 Wagoneer Series II is ready for daily use, even if it is just to drop off and pick up the kiddos from school.
