The excellent Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is dead, but at least Ford is bringing back the Mach 1 to help fill the void it’ll leave in the lineup between the 480-hp Bullitt and the 760-hp Shelby GT500. The order books have opened for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1, and prices start at $52,915—just a little more than the $48,900 Bullitt and far cheaper than the now-defunct GT350, which started at $61,635.
Like the Bullitt, the Mach 1 delivers 480 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque from a 5.0-liter V-8 engine. It also shares many components with the GT350, including its air intake, Tremec TR-3160 six-speed manual transmission, and auxiliary oil cooler. Buyers also can select a 10-speed automatic, an option not available on the Shelby or Bullitt.

To improve downforce, the Mach 1 features a beefier front splitter. The powerful ‘Stang also boasts specially tuned MagneRide adaptive shocks, stiffer anti-roll bars and front springs, unique electric power-steering calibration, and the brake booster from the Mustang GT Performance Pack 2. It borrows from the Shelby GT500 with its rear toe links, rear diffuser, and rear-axle cooler.
The price announcement celebrates the 73rd anniversary of Chuck Yeager’s breaking the sound barrier—aka Mach 1—on October 14, 1947. Of course, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 coupe can’t actually achieve Mach 1, but it will arrive in dealerships quickly, starting in the spring of 2021.
As we previously reported, the Mustang lineup more broadly receives a few other updates for 2021. New paint colors are available, and models with the entry-level turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and GTs with the Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 receive Ford CoPilot360, an active-safety suite with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
