Americas Rallycross back in action for doubleheader at St. Louis

Live coverage of ARX of Gateway begins on Saturday, July 13 at 11:35 a.m. CT on Facebook.com/ARXRallycross.

The inaugural Americas Rallycross doubleheader is set to get underway this weekend at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, for the ARX of Gateway.

The second and third rounds of the 2019 ARX season will be held over two days, with three qualifying sessions, semifinals and a six-lap final to determine the winner being run on both Saturday and Sunday, making the event a critical points opportunity in the battle to become the next ARX champion.

Subaru Motorsports USA’s Scott Speed heads to the second new rallycross facility on the schedule with the drivers’ championship points lead after taking the first win of the season at the Cooper Tires ARX of Mid-Ohio. That win was the first for Subaru in ARX competition.

Such is the competitiveness of the ARX Supercar field in 2019 that it was anyone’s race to win at Mid-Ohio, and more of the same can be expected on the new 0.7-mile 60 percent asphalt and 40 percent Midwestern dirt WWT Raceway rallycross course. Andretti Rallycross’ Tanner Foust is second in the points after taking top qualifier in the Intermediate Classification with two fastest times at Mid-Ohio and is just ahead of Loenbro Motorsports’ teammates Steve Arpin and 18-year-old rookie Travis PeCoy in the championship standings.

The Loenbro team’s work in re-developing the Ford Fiesta was reflected by the double-podium in round 1, but it could also easily have been at least a double podium for Subaru Motorsports USA, until Australia’s Chris Atkinson and Sweden’s Patrik Sandell collided at the joker lap merge in the final. Both drivers will be targeting their first podium of the season this weekend.

The same goes for another ARX Supercar rookie Cabot Bigham, who driving the No. 02 Oink Clothing Volkswagen Beetle R for Andretti Rallycross, who also has eyes on the podium this weekend.

At every ARX round, the official ARX single-specification support category, ARX2 will compete, along with the brand new ARX3 series. ARX3 features drivers’ championship leader John McInnes, American TV personality Aaron Kaufman and X Games gold medallist in Freestyle Motocross, Blake Williams.
