Turns out the ID.Buggy has been squashed. With the firm contracted to build it, e.GO mobile entering into insolvency in April. But fear not! There may be another concept to fill its shoes.
The Buggy concept debuted at Geneva last year and seems to have been designed to show how other manufacturers could take the MEB platform and build their own cars on top of it. But e.GO Mobile, since facing money problems, no longer has a site to build the little off-roader. Volkswagen, meanwhile, only does mass production, per comments made to German media, so there appears to be no home for the concept.
So, as of June, the ID.BUGGY is a no go. Despite that, it seems to have been successful in its goal of attracting other manufacturers, with Ford signing up to use the platform to build Ford-branded EVs in Europe.
That leaves the ID.FAMILY without funky, chunky off-roader, though, and according to Car Magazine, that won’t do. The UK magazine alleges that the ID.RUGGEDZZ is the brainchild of none other than Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess.
The little off-roader will supposedly cash in on the current wave of boxy off-roaders like the Bronco, the Wrangler, and the Discovery. Except at a lower price, so it might be more like the Suzuki Jimny.
Unfortunately, like the ID.BUGGY, you probably shouldn’t hold your breath to ever see one in the US. There are, reportedly, plans to produce the RUGGEDZZ as a Skoda. The Car Magazine report suggests that VW may also want to build an electric “Thing,” though we’re not sure which we’d prefer. As fun as the Type 181 is, a little, boxy electric off-roader in the style of the Jimny sounds pretty great.
