The tech is currently undergoing trial runs as part of the Urban Mobility initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology.

According to media reports, Skoda is working on a new tech involving a front grille display that, depending on the car’s speed, will alert nearby pedestrians whether it is safe for them to cross or not.

The front grille display features LED strip holders that flash green arrows when it’s safe for pedestrians to move, a red cross when it is not and an orange triangle when the car itself is about to move. Skoda suggests that the tech will work automatically, without the driver’s interaction, with the driver having no control over what is displayed.

The symbols chosen to alert pedestrians are “widely recognisable”. Skoda also states that the LED screen is capable of creating a variety of animations expanding its usage to multiple other uses and situations.
