Volkswagen CEO shows off 333hp ID.X hatch

Ralf Brandstätter takes to LinkedIn to show what an all-wheel-drive electric hot hatch might look like

Some of the world’s most memorable hot hatches have been created by repurposing powertrains meant for larger models – think Renaultsport Clios, Alfa 147 GTA, Audi S1 and Yaris GRMN. Now it seems the logic will be applied to electric hot hatches, too, if the new VW ID.X concept is anything to go by.

Essentially it takes the powertrain of the recently revealed ID.4 GTX and adds it to the ID.3 hatch, which means four-wheel drive (all ID.3s so far have been RWD) and a bigger 82kWh battery. But it’s been further optimised for this installation – in timeless hot hatch style – for 333hp and a possible 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds.

But outright performance isn’t the most exciting about the ID.X – which isn’t often the case for EVs. It’s said to be 200kg lighter than its ID siblings; even though it’s not clear if that’s the 1,800kg ID3 or 2,000kg ID4 isn’t clear, but less weight is always to be applauded. Certainly there seems to be concessions here, with sports seats and new (hopefully lighter) wheels, if not quite a quarter-tonne of savings.

And there’s a Drift Mode. Yep, the ID.3 has gone from rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive and then back to rear-wheel drive on demand. Still, who are we to complain – not when the technology has worked so well on a Golf R – and the instant nature of EV power should make it even more effective here. It’s said that features like the Drift Mode show off the flexibility and possibilities of the MEB platform.

Said by the man in charge, in fact. See, the ID.X hasn’t been subjected to a typical reveal. Instead it was shown to the world via VW CEO Ralf Brandstatter’s personal LinkedIn; apparently the boss has had a drive and likes it very much.

“I have often talked about how versatile our MEB is. The ID.X makes this very clear,” he wrote. “Even if the ID.X will not be a production vehicle, we will take up many ideas.” Place your bets on an ID.3 R now…
