Sebastian Vettel pole on Saturday for the F1 Canadian Grand Prix — his first pole since the 2018 German Grand Prix — gives Ferrari hope that it can put an end to Mercedes’ domination of the 2019 Formula 1 season.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton qualified second, followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo.
Vettel and Ferrari have looked quick throughout the weekend, save for a poor practice 1, and Ferrari actually went into qualifyiing as favorites to take pole for a second year running in Montreal.
Making use of the superior straight line pace of his Ferrari, Vettel was able to gain half a second in the final sector alone, pushing a hard fighting Hamilton back down to second.
“I’m full of adrenaline to be honest,” said Vettel. “The feeling in the car was just kept coming. You feel the grip and you just keep going for it and that was one of those laps so, really, really nice. I really enjoyed it.
“I’m very happy for the team because the last 17 races, no but the last few weeks have been very tough for us.”
Turning attentions to Sunday and the Grand Prix, Vettel said that his car felt awful on the long runs – high levels of tire wear being a concern in every garage.
“It was awful,” said Vettel. “I think, today the car was a lot better and we take that into tomorrow. Obviously, we also avoid the soft tire, the red tire in the race tomorrow because we managed to go through with the yellow tire, the medium. Good day, the car felt good and we can carry that through to the race.”
Hamilton may have taken four wins from the opening six races of the season but he has struggled to find his usual domineering form in qualifying, heading the field just twice on Saturday. Maybe because he has been successful without starting at the front or for some other reason, Hamilton was unusually upbeat having just been bested by a rival.
“Honestly, I don’t know why but for whatever reason, I don’t feel disappointment,” said Hamilton. “We gave it everything we could but, particularly through that last sector, they (Ferrari) were killing us. I think it was something like four tenths or five tenths on the straights, so I did everything I could and we did everything we could.
“Our timing was right, our procedures were perfect so I’m really happy with the job. We had P1 for a second and we knew that they were quick but this is good, this is how racing should be. I’m glad that I was able to split the Ferraris and tomorrow it’s going to be interesting.”
The tense qualifying session was interrupted for a period by a red flag caused by the Haas of Kevin Magnussen, the Dane crashing into the fabled ‘Wall of Champions’. His accident in the dying seconds of Q2 meant that his Haas teammate Romain Grosjean and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen were unable to complete their laps and both were knocked out at this stage.
Ironically, Magnussen himself had scraped through but the heavy damage meant that he was unable to take part in the session any further.
