Contenders accuse NASCAR Michigan winner of jumping restart

Rivals claim Joey Logano jumped the final restart on Monday in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

Joey Logano clearly had the best car on Monday in the rain-delayed Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway, but his closest pursuers felt like he jumped the final restart in order to obtain the track position that seemed vital throughout the afternoon.

While Logano proved capable of passing for the lead when shuffled out of the top spot, most drivers proved virtually incapable of getting around the leader once he obtained clean air.

As a result, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. felt like Logano jumped on the throttle prior to the restart zone in order to ensure himself the track position needed to hold off the field on a green-white-checkered NASCAR Overtime finish.

“The 22 may or may not have jumped the restart there a little bit and got out and got clear,” Kyle Busch said. “It’s pretty monotone after that.”

Truex had a more definitive opinion.

“He clearly went before the box,” Truex said. That’s the way it goes. They didn’t call it. And it didn’t matter because he had the fastest car anyway. It’s a moot point.”

Kurt Busch said he would have done the same thing.

“Logano knew he had to go early because that was his best chance to get ahead of (Truex) and that changed the complexion of the race,” he said. “It’s exactly what I would have done in his position.”

A NASCAR spokesman said the restart was reviewed by race control and found nothing that stood out. NASCAR utilizes four cameras on pit road pointed towards the restart zone to determine if a driver launches before the restart zone.

Truex had a different view of that, too.

“It was clear,” he said. “Go back and watch it. It was clear.”

For his part, Logano just laughed at the insinuation after the race. He even relished what he determined was one of his better ones in recent memory.

“I was able to see it right in front of me,” he said of the restart zone. “I had a good restart there didn’t I? That one felt good. Yeap!”
