We’ve talked already about VW’s record-setting attempts with the electric ID. R racer. Showing that just because you’re electric doesn’t mean you can’t be quick over some incredibly difficult tracks. Like the race to the clouds at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb.
The latest is a lap of the Nurburgring, with the company looking to set a very fast time around the 12.9 mile track. No small feat for an EV, where delivering that much power over such a long distance taxes the cooling capabilities of every driveline component.
Now, Volkswagen has broken the existing electric lap record around the ‘Ring and Volkswagen says the ID. R is now the second quickest car ever to lap the track.
VW recalls the Porsche 956. Which 36 years ago managed 6 minutes, 11.3 seconds. A record that stood until another Porsche racer last year. This time a hybrid. The ID. R didn’t beat last year’s run, but it beat the existing electric record, set by a NIO EP9, by 40.5 seconds and set a 6:05.336.
Now Volkswagen has made the entire lap available so that you can watch and see just how fast an average of 127 mph around the Green Hell really is.
