The global sales of electric vehicles exceeded 1.2 million units in August 2023, almost creating a new record. As per reports, 12,38,484 units of passenger electric cars were registered globally in August 2023 – a 45% rise compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n
Of the 1.2 million electric cars sold, BEVs accounted for 9,00,000 units, while PHEVs, HEVs and other smaller electrified cars registered the remaining 3,58,000 units of sales. In terms of year-to-date numbers, EVs have registered 8.1 million units of sales, of which BEVs and PHEVs account for 5.7 million and 2.5 million units, respectively.<\/p>\n
Like previous months, the Tesla Model Y maintained the title of the best-selling EV, registering 1,15,885 units in August 2023. However, of the top 10 best-selling EVs, 8 of them came from Chinese brands such as BYD and GAC. The Tesla Model 3 was the only other non-Chinese EV on the list at 3rd place, with 48,815 units sold in August 2023.<\/p>\n
Among the brand rankings, BYD leads the charge with 2,61,504 EVs sold in August 2023, ahead of Tesla, which managed 1,70,171 EV registrations during the same month. Another Chinese brand, GAC Aion was third selling 51,570 EV units, with Volkswagen & BMW completing the top 5, managing 43,711 units and 43,304 units, respectively.<\/p>\n
